Intellectual property (IP) licensing trends in the semiconductor industry have changed significantly in the past five years. This topic was explored at the LES (USA & Canada) Winter Meeting in Silicon Valley by an expert panel including Julia Elvidge of Chipworks, Jim Sheridan of Patterson Sheridan, Scott Hover-Smoot of Xilinx, Eric Janofsky of Novellus, Sandeep Agarwal of Tessera, Mark Reiten of Silicon Storage Technologies, and Stefan Tamme of Rambus.
The discussion centered around three general themes that included the impact of non-practicing entities (NPE), consolidation and disaggregation of the semiconductor industry and shifts in the foreign patent portfolios.
